We launched HCL in 1976. This was a time when a normal trunk call cost Rs. 48. For an urgent trunk call, which was supposed to come in immediately but actually took half-a-day, you paid Rs. 96 and for immediate communication you used a lighting call, which cost Rs. 192 per minute. It was at this time, when communication was practically non-existent that we were looking out of a small barsati (a temporary room on the terrace) in Delhi, where HCL was launched, and planning to introduce modern computing in India.
Setting up a new business is very exciting and challenging. The spirit of entrepreneurship that marked the initial years of HCL defined the character of the organization. I have always tried to infuse that excitement of new business in every project that we undertook and every employee who joined the HCL family.
We started off with a focus on technology and invested over three decades in consolidating our position as an industry leader. Now however, we have diversified and are working to build our brand presence in the fields of healthcare and talent building.
Today, the single most valuable asset that we own is the brand “HCL.” It is a name that people have come to associate with quality performance, growth and stability. And in turn HCL has internalized the brand philosophy of “We Touch Lives” through its technological offerings, solutions, multispecialty clinics etc.
HCL has always been a “people-oriented” business. During the initial days, HCL not just pioneered computing in India but it made technology available to everybody. The one thing that drove us to make better products was my belief that the microprocessor had the power of changing everybody’s life. We have come a long way from those days in the late 1970s but the philosophy has remained unchanged. When we get into partnerships, we do not limit ourselves to the deal but go beyond to build meaningful relationships that mean more than just business. Even today, as we slowly diversify and rebuild ourselves as a conglomerate, we focus on delivering the best healthcare services through HCL Healthcare and make the youth more employable through HCL TalentCare.
HCL has come a long way but we still have a long road ahead and as we move forward we look to build an ever-stronger brand. We will do that by taking the values we have established -- uncompromising quality, creativity, integrity, and a problem solving approach -- and incorporating them in all that we do, and all that we are.Chairman,
